Kudos to Taylor Morrison Homes of West Florida! What better way to show their determination to be totally GREEN by starting a new recycling collection center for building construction site waste! This creates a cleaner job site while recycling the construction waste.

Wood, cardboard, construction debris and solid waste will all be recycled instead of going to the landfill. The company estimates that two to three dumpsters per home will be eliminated. Two dumpsters (these are large and deep if you haven’t seen one) times the number of new homes being constructed at this time is a great step in the right direction. Wouldn’t it be great if more builders did the same? Imagine the landfill space that would be saved!

Mote Marine, a world-renowned research center is harvesting caviar at its facility in Sarasota.  Last year, Mote Marine harvested and sold 1.5 metric tons of caviar. The market value is almost $3 Million Dollars.

“The project combines the opportunity to save and preserve certain kinds of fish, which is Mote’s mission,  while also creating a model for sustainability and selling fancy food,” stated the director of the Mote’s sturgeon aquaculture program.”

It all takes place at the Mote Aquaculture Park, a 200-acre operation in Sarasota. The park contains research labs, offices, fish-growing tanks and caviar harvesting operations.

In 1998, the decision was made to create a sustainable commercial system. Raising fish for their meat alone was not economically profitable but combining it with a luxury product was and the project was off and running. The Siberian sturgeon was chosen as the fish to use. “It may sound crazy to grow Siberian sturgeon in Florida, but they actually have the genetic capability of handing warmer temperatures than many other sturgeons,” Michaels, the director stated.  They are hopeful this will be the year when the program makes a profit.

“Classification of caviar goes back to the time when 90 percent of the product was produced in the Caspian Sea by the USSR and Iran. After the fall of the Soviet Union, environmental problems and overfishing led to a decline in production, opening the door for caviar aquaculture. There are three classes of Caviar: Beluga has the largest eggs. The other two categories are Ossetra and Sevruga. Mote’s caviar is in the Ossetra class. “

Mote caviar is featured on the Internet by Costco and Petrossian — the gourmet website for caviar — evidence of its high quality. In Southwest Florida, the locally grown caviar is found at Ophelia’s On The Bay, Crab and Fin, Michael’s on East, Morton’s Gourmet Market, Captain Brian’s Seafood Market and Ocean Harvest.  Whole Foods has recently added it to their store, selling it for $55 an ounce. Joey Wells, the Whole Foods’ Florida regional coordinator, states it has become their best-selling caviar.

Now, that I know it’s available, I’ll have to try it!  So should you especially if you’re a Florida resident or a vacationer here for a great holiday!  We need to support our local businesses!

            List Your Green Feature Choices for Florida Gulf Coast Builders

Builders are building homes again in Manatee and Sarasota Counties due to the increased demand brought on by our distressed market! We are solidly on the road to recovery and new construction is on the rise. The builders are all different with some builders custom building a LEED home for some customers, builders doing Energy Star Appliances, Builders doing Green Features in Landscaping and other Builders doing a mix of Green Features. I would like to see all the local builders doing more so I’m asking for your input on what YOU, as the consumer, want to see in Green Features if you were to purchase a Home or Condo in the Sarasota – Lakewood Ranch – Bradenton FL area of the Gulf Coast.

My question to you, the consumer, is:

What Green Features are the most important to you?

• 1- Is it Energy Saving Appliances, A/C Systems and other Energy Saving Products?
• 2-  Is it Water Saving Products?
• 3-  Is it Construction Materials that are Green such as new Green Roofing, Green Framing or Insulation and other building materials?
• 4-  Is it Green, Low VOC products such as paint and carpet that are from recycled products and don’t smell   like the products being used now?
• 5 –Is it Landscaping with Green, native plants and planting appropriate climate plantings?

I’d really like your votes. In my rating, I would put them in this order:

2-  Our world’s water supply is precious and we need to do all we can to not waste this resource.

1-  Energy saving products in a home means less power usage and savings but also lowers our dependence on fuel. Once again, saving our natural resources.

4- Low VOC paint and carpet eliminate smells associated with new products. As a person with allergies, I can’t spend more than a few minutes in a carpet store. And, recycled carpet and paints are now available making use of old carpet and paint – why wouldn’t you buy them if you could?

3- Green construction products for new construction should be used by ALL builders!

5- I have to put landscaping of your property as the last choice for me. If you landscape your yard with native plants and can use water sparingly, you save on water which is, of course, my #1 rating. Not everyone has the option of landscaping so that is another reason I’ve listed it as my fifth choice.

Did you realize all these products exist. If you didn’t, I hope I’ve made you aware of Green products you can purchase when the need arises for your home or yard.

I hope to take the results, if you answer me with a comment, to the local builders and let them know what YOU think is important. Do I think they will listen – Yes, I do!
